CPA Financial Literacy Session: Understanding Financial Statements

Join Myles Evans CPA for an online Financial Literacy Session hosted by the Small Business Centre on Wednesday September 20th at 2:30pm and explore how to review and understand the terms and concepts of your financial statements to be able to ask informed questions of your financial professionals.

Understanding Financial Statements – CPA Financial Literacy Session will answer the following questions:
• How’s the business doing?
• Did we make money this year?
• What does my P&L tell me?
• Why do I need a balance sheet?
• Where is my cash coming from?
• Where is my cash going to?
• Why isn’t my cash equal to my profit?

Myles is a Business Advisor in Toronto with a decade of experience in auditing, consulting, and education. After beginning his career as an auditor and earning his CPA designation, Myles left Canada to teach at a college in Doha, Qatar. There, he developed and instructed courses that introduced learners to the basic concepts of financial accounting, finance, and auditing. This rewarding opportunity has motivated him to continue teaching and aiding those eager to learn. Returning to Canada to resume his career as a consultant and business advisor, Myles now collaborates with businesses to address a broad range of challenges, including identifying technological solutions, creating financial forecasts, and implementing reporting and analytics tools. Myles has been a volunteer with CPA Canada’s Financial Literacy program since September 2021 and looks forward to presenting to you, and helping you understand financial statements.

Comm., CPA CA, CFA, CBV for an online Financial Literacy Session hosted by the Small Business Centre and explore the key concepts of cash management, working capital and operational efficiency. Business owners will be able to review and change cash management practices so less cash is required to operate the business and the cash needs of the business can be projected and analyzed.

Maximize Your Business – Financial Literacy Session will answer the following questions:

• Sales are great, why don’t we have any cash?
• Do we have enough cash to pay expenses?
• How much cash do we need for expansion?
• Can I free up some cash from the business?
• How can I get customers to pay on time?
• Are we managing cash efficiently?

Join Kathy Chan Chartered Professional Accountant for an online Financial Literacy Session hosted by the Small Business Centre and explore how to use financial management tools to evaluate your business and make informed financial decisions.

The Money Side of Business – CPA Financial Literacy Session is all about the basic tools and techniques of financial management for a business owner, including budget creation and monitoring, cash management, product/division/customer analysis, planning/forecasting, and trend analysis.

The Money Side of Business Financial Literacy Session will answer the following questions:

• What’s financial management?
• What tools can help operate my business?
• How do I determine if a product is profitable?
• What’s my most profitable product?
• Who are my most profitable customers?
• Why do I need a budget?
• How do I create and use a budget?
• What reports do I need?
• How do I tell where my business is heading?

Kathy Chan is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Certified Local Government Manager. She has recently retired from active employment with over 30 years in public service, having served in senior financial roles in municipal governments and with the Government of Alberta. In her retirement, she volunteers her time as the Treasurer for the Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation, Treasurer for the Cornerstone Counselling Society, being a part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, and a Financial Literacy presenter.
