Small Business Centre: Starter Plus Workshop – Belleville

If you are over 18 years of ages and are thinking of starting or expanding a full time business, you may be eligible for the Starter Plus grant. To qualify your business must fall into one of the three categories listed below:

* Introducing a new product or service
* Create a new process for creating or delivering a product/ service
* Introduce a new market to the region

This grant can provide up to $5,000 to offset expenses and offers training for start ups and business assistance for companies expanding. Additional program benefits include mentoring, workshops, networking, and more.

Launch Lab: Market Intelligence Workshop

Did you know you can access free market intelligence reports through Launch Lab?

Thanks to their partners at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, their clients have access to 18 different databases of information. But how do you use them? Is this a service your venture should be exploring right now? What types of questions should you be asking, and what type of information should you be hoping for in return?

Join Launch Lab, and their partners from Queen’s Office of Partnerships and Innovation for a presentation from the MaRS market intelligence team! They’ll be talking about their service and how your business can take advantage of such a valuable resource. They’ll be traveling from Toronto to answer your questions, so come out to this quick workshop, network, and learn about how you can use market intelligence reports in the new year.

Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre: Winter 2018 Regional Pitch Competition, Deadline Feb 4th

If you have a new and innovative business idea, come make your pitch to receive funding AND support from the DDQIC team.

The regional pitch competition allows both experienced and aspiring entrepreneurs to pitch their venture to a panel of judges, compete for funding, and receive immediate feedback on their project.  Winning teams will also be provided with the opportunity to attend a two-week intensive summer boot camp to help accelerate their venture to enhance their business acumen.

Anyone with a business idea they with to pursue in Kingston or surrounding area is welcome to apply!  Applicants do NOT need to be affiliated with Queen’s.

If you think your venture has what it takes, please complete their online application by February 4th.

Small Business Centre: Winter Survival Workshops – Succession Planning / Valuing a Business Workshop – Picton Town Hall

It’s that time of year again! As winter approaches, it provides a chance for business owners and operators to reflect on the recent busy season, to plan and strategize for next year, and take advantage of growth opportunities. The successful Winter Survival Workshop series, now in its fifth year has been fostering and motivating fresh ideas and helping local businesses take advantage of opportunities to expand, improve, reach new markets and become more efficient since 2013.

In partnership with The Small Business Centre, PELA CFDC and the Prince Edward County Chamber of Commerce, The County’s Winter Survival Workshops deliver important and relevant training and education to small businesses in Prince Edward County to help them stay competitive.

  • Wanting to sell the business within the next year?
  • Wondering how to assess and value a business on the market today?

  • Should you stay involved in some way?  How to ensure your agreement is mutually binding.
  • Learn how to accurately value your business before you make the decision to put it on the market.
  • Steps you can take now to gather proof of the value added intangibles such as customer loyalty.

Thinking of buying an existing business?

  • Explore the difference between buying a business for the ‘Life Style’ or to create wealth.
  • Get tips on how to determine the fair market value of a business you are considering for purchase.
  • Learn how to understand and analyze the financials you are provided by the seller.
  • Understand the signs of loyalty to the business and loyalty to the business owner.
  • Where to get information about zoning and bylaw implications of the business/property.
